*** COMMUNIQUÉ JUNE 15, 2020 FROM SÛRETÉ DU QUÉBEC ***

 BOATING SAFETY

With the summer season just around the corner, many boaters are ready to use their boats and navigate the various bodies of water in Québec.  The nautical patrollers of the Sûreté du Québec, who see to the safety of boaters, will be present again this season to ensure the safety of all.

In the current context of the Covid-19, in addition to performing your outings on the water in compliance with the prevention measures recommended by Public Health  https://www.quebec.ca/gouv, you must ensure that you have on board all the necessary safety equipment required by law depending on the type of boat you have.  For the full list, visit the shipping act site.

Ready to take the waterway ? To ensure that your nautical activities are carried out safely, The Sûreté du Québec would like to remind you some of important information.

Did you know ?

  • 75% of victims in 2019 did not wear PFD
  • Alcohol was consumed in 31% of fatal incidents in 2019
  • On water, a consumption is worth 3

(Source :  Lifesaving Society)

Personnal flotation device (PFD)

Failure to wear a PFD is the single most important contributing factor in fatal nautical events each year.  The master must carry on approved PFD of the appropriate size for each person on board.  Wearing a PFD is really essential and will definitely make a difference in the event of an incident.  It is strongly recommended to wear it at all times.

Alcohol and drug use

The second contributing factor to fatal boating events is the ability to drive while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both.  It should be remembered that the effects are intensified with the addition of the sun, boat movements dans fatigue.  The captain's ability to steer the boat is therefore greatly reduced.  These behaviors put you and other users at risk, as well as exposing yourself to charges under the Criminal Code.

At all times, The Sûreté du Québec urges you to be cautious in respecting the various rules surrounding pleasure boating.  Including obligations under the Merchant Marine Act and the recommendations of Transport Canada.

*** REMINDER - MEDAL FOR DOGS ***

Since March 3, 2020, the new provincial regulation on the supervision of dogs came into force and municipalities had until June 3, 2020 to inform the public and keep a dog registration form and give a medal to all dogs on its territory. So far we have only awarded 10 medals ... You are therefore invited to come and get a medal for your dog ... and good news it’s free!

Directives for the next collections (garbage & recycling) to ensure the safety of employees

- Bins that are too heavily loaded (+ 170 pounds) cannot be lifted by the bin lifter, so they will not be picked up
- The bags put on the ground will not be picked up to avoid any risk to employees of contamination of the Covid-19
In conclusion, only the bins respecting the lifting weight will be picked up. There are a few cases of Covid-19 confirmed at the Tricentris plant in Gatineau (sorting center). We must therefore take these exceptional measures in this time of crisis.

Reminder:

Handling your bins can spread the virus, especially by the handle.

Recommandation:  Handle your bins with gloves, disinfect the handles before and after collection, take out your bins the day before collection.

For your neighbors, for our employees and yourselves.  Together we make a difference !! It's going to be fine

Thank you for your understanding and especially your collaboration
